Study aim: "The objective of this study was to establish and assess the benthic bioavailability of PCDD/Fs in Lake Ontario sediments. The aquatic oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus was employed as the test species because of its native presence in Lake Ontario, ability to accumulate relatively high levels of TCDD and other Ah receptor agonists with no toxic effects, and overall relevance to trophic transfer in aquatic food webs to more sensitive vertebrates."
