Source: McElroy AE, Means JC. 1988. Factors affecting the bioavailability of hexachlorobiphenyls to benthic organisms.
Study aim: "In the present study, interactions between: (1) organic carbon content of the sediment; (2) equilibration time of the contaminant with the sediment; and (3) feeding strategies of the organism were simultaneously investigated. Apparent preference factors were calculated in an attempt to factor out the influence of strict partitioning behavior between lipophilic pools in sediments and organisms on bioaccumulation. A hexachlorobiphenyl was chosen as a model compound in this study because of its low water solubility and its resistance to metabolism."
