Study aim: "This study was directed toward understanding and explaining the frequently observed increased persistence and decreased bioavailability of organic hydrocarbons in biologically active sediments and the corresponding consequences to prediction, control, and regulation of these contaminants. We focus on polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons with particular emphasis on phenanthrene and examine the bioaccumulation and bioavailability of desorption-resistant phenanthrene to a deposit-feeding oligochaete."
